WHISTLER MANTRA: TWO LEGS GOOD, FOUR LEGS BETTER

11th Annual DogFest pays homage to best friends at

TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival, April 21-22 2007

WHISTLER, BC , April 4 2007 – It might not come around again until 2018 but in Whistler, every year is the Year of the Dog.

From poetic doggie obituaries in the local newspaper, to dedicated dog beaches, to headline-grabbing dog-napping dramas to the eleventh annual Dogfest, our four-legged friends are undoubtedly up front and centre of life in Whistler.

Nowhere is Whistler’s “Power to the Pooches” conviction more in evidence than at the annual Whistler Dog Parade, taking place this year April 21-22, 2007.

Canines of all stripes are invited to lead their owners, in finest frockery, in the 200 strong parade on Saturday April 21 at 2:15pm.

Prizes for Best Dressed Dog and the Dog Owner Look-a-Like competitions up the ante, and provide the answer to those profound questions like:
▫        Do dogs need to wear accessories? Or are dogs actually the accessory?; and

▫        Do dogs and owners start to look alike after a while? Or are people drawn to dogs who look them from the outset?

Opening for the Dog Parade from noon (and repeating again afterwards at 4:00pm) will be the Paws Ahead agility presentation and the Paws2Dance dancing dog display.

The displays will also happen on Sunday April 22 from 12:15, with a Community Showcase of dog tricks, tales and tails from 1:30.

Proceeds support Whistler Animals Galore (WAG), a Whistler-based no-kill animal shelter.

The two days of exhibitions, demos and comps guarantee some quality master-canine bonding, and great free family entertainment during the final weekend of the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

“TWSSF is a celebration of all that’s core to mountain life,” says 9 month old blue heeler, Dexter. “As long as my human has a set of wheels, a set of boards and me, I know that her Maslow’s hierarchy of needs are being met.” Festival Managing Director, Sue Eckersley agrees.

Maggie Muggins, a 15 year old Scottish terrier has been in training for this year’s Silly Dog Tricks contest. Having entered the parade since 2000, Maggie looks forward to all the treats in the Booth Village and raising money for underprivileged cats and dogs. “Being a Scottie, I can be a bit competitive, and that can stress me out. But my mom is a dog trainer, and she always tells me, ‘Consistency is the key!’”

DogFest Producer Kathleen Duffey, who sometimes wonders if she herself is part-canine, echoes Maggie’s enthusiasm and exhorts all two-legged and four-legged folk to check out Whistler’s Dogfest celebration.

The TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival is produced by Watermark Communications, a Whistler sports & entertainment marketing company, and presented in partnership with Tourism Whistler and Whistler Blackcomb. Founded by W1’s Doug Perry twelve years ago, and now the largest annual winter sports and music festival in North America, the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival is a high-octane 10 day and night showcase of the best of snowsports, music, arts and mountain life. Featuring major professional ski and snowboarding competitions, the largest free outdoor concert series in Canada, the legendary Pro Photographer and Filmmaker Showdowns, and many more unique art and cultural showcases, the Festival is the ultimate wrap party.
